ABOUT KERRIE
Kerrie Obert is a speech language pathologist and singing voice specialist from Columbus Ohio. She has worked for nearly 30 years in the voice industry and is internationally acclaimed for her work on tongue and twang. She has performed thousands of endoscopies and brings a unique perspective to voice training because of her extensive experience in a busy voice disorder’s clinic. A performer herself, she understands the complexities of singing and industry demands.
The space between the larynx and the soft palate is very small but plays an important role in shaping timbre.
It is the place where singers have the most agency in creating their signature sound.
It's time to learn how in this practical two part course
Part One:
Warmth, Depth & Soul
In this lecture students will learn to narrow and widen the space between the back of the tongue and the back wall of the pharynx.
Students will learn to add warmth, depth, and "soul" to their sounds using a narrowed anterior to posterior dimension and to remove this for use in choral and group singing where blend is valued.
This course will be in "lesson" format with lots of singing and practice strategies.
Part Two:
Brightness for Rock, Pop & MT
In this lecture students will learn to narrow and release the oro and laryngopharynx in the lateral to medial dimension.
Participants will learn to add brightness and "excitement" to their sounds using a narrowed lateral to medial dimension--a sound that is very useful in rock/pop and musical theatre singing.
Use of this brightening strategy requires laryngeal height considerations which we will discuss in the class.
Students will also learn how to reduce lateral to medial narrowing for use in applications where blend is valued.
This course will be in "lesson" format with lots of singing and practice strategies.
