Julia is a teacher and performer who is passionate about the personal discovery process of singing. Julia focuses on freeing authentic voices by building skills and confidence through positive learning, good vocal health and holistic self awareness.
Julia holds a BA (Hons) Performance Art with Music, Estill Levels I and II and is a certified Vocal Health First Aider. She is also trained in a diverse set of vocal methodologies (CVT, SLS, Accent Method) and uses these to tailor the learning to the student, using approaches based in neurology to acoustics to posture to mindfulness. She has 20 years ‘real world’ experience (and counting!) as a touring singer and keyboard player and has opened stages for acts such as The Stranglers, Jethro Tull, Newton Faulkner and The Blockheads and worked with artists such as Del Palmer (Kate Bush’s bass player, engineer and vocal producer).
She also owns and manages Firespark Studios, a professional teaching, recording and rehearsal facility in Farnborough. She is a member of the British Voice Association, fully insured and DBS security cleared. Julia teaches one-to-one vocal and piano lessons online and in person at her studio, for all ages and abilities as well as teaching at a variety of educational establishments. Julia has helped many students to gain exam qualifications (ABRSM, LCM, RSL, Trinity), coached students for tv/theatre/studio auditions and also specialises in coaching those who want to sing and play simultaneously. She is also able to advise on the technical aspects of music technology, coaching students to be able to write and record themselves, and to know more about their own technical sound requirements when performing live. She also specialises in working with neuro diverse students, coaching those with performance anxiety and helping performers who have demanding tour schedules.
“How glad am I to have found Julia! She is tip top on technique, at the same time encouraging me to experiment and explore my own voice. Julia is inventive and open-minded in her approach, drawing on her extensive knowledge and professional experience. After several demoralising experiences, I have at last found an understanding and supportive teacher who has demonstrated to me that I really can sing!” – Kay
“Julia’s passion for and knowledge of music is reflected in her teaching style; her enthusiasm is infectious and is a great foundation for providing a supportive and fun learning environment. She’s a great coach – supportive, encouraging and giving effective feedback that I can really use to improve my performance, whilst allowing me to set my own pace of learning.” – Sharon
“I can’t overstate how much fun it is working with Julia. I was amazed how quickly I felt and heard my singing improve, and I’ve actually started to enjoy singing rather than just seeing it as one of those things you have to do when writing and performing. Julia starts with some basic building blocks that help right from day one, and then brings these into play holistically as you progress to working on particular pieces in detail. It’s a genuinely fascinating process.” – Martin
